Fall APAC MVP Community Connect - Seoul 2017

MVPs are special. Meeting many within the APAC region in a single venue for networking is extra special. There are speakers, bloggers, community organizers and many more with different skills in different technology focuses. When we blend in with different cultures and technologies, it generates new ideas and create new opportunities such like visiting each other for different communities. I missed the event last year so wanted to make it to Seoul this time. I never thought it would be this awesome until I came in here.
The event held from 10th to 12th November 2017 and it covered most of the aspects of a technology networking event. The event venue for the first day and accommodation were provided at the Shilla hotel, which is a top rated and well deserved place.

Speaking at European SharePoint Conference

I am writing this about a week after the European SharePoint Conference 2015 while on the way back to Sri Lanka after a tour in Germany.

It was a good opportunity to speak at the Europe's largest SharePoint Conference which was held at Stockholm, Sweden this year. I got to deliver the session T9, which was on Exploring the Potentials of Skype for Business.

Its no doubt that Skype for Business has made a huge progress over the past few years as a Unified Communication Tool for enterprises. The numbers are ever growing and so does the features and the capabilities. I started with a little introduction to what are the cool features that were not much used or highlighted within the people though they can make your days productive. It included 2 demos including a basic introduction and then a deep dive in to meeting capabilities.

Speaking at the Share-The-Point Southeast Asia 2014

The great Share-The-Point Southeast Asia Conference for year 2014 just concluded yesterday. It had a good line up of sessions that worth for Developers, Business people as well as any other type of SharePoint enthusiasts.

Me being a speaker

I got a great opportunity to interact with the other speakers who has many experiences and knowledge to share. My topic was "Using Lync for Cost Effective and Efficient Communications". It was really good preparation experience as it is one of the rare moments I shared the business aspect of a technology like this.

The demonstration included some key features provided by Lync for supporting the meetings. It is really nice the way how Lync supports meetings as it provides multiple sharing options for,

  • Desktop sharing
  • Sharing a single program
  • PowerPoint presentation sharing
  • Whiteboard and
  • Polls

BCS in SharePoint 2013 @ SharePoint Sri Lanka User Group, July 2014 Meetup

  • What is a Business Connectivity Service?
  • Why use business connectivity services?
  • How to deploy a Business Connectivity Service?

These were the key questions focused for the first session for the SharePoint Sri Lanka User Group meeting for July 2014.
Connecting data from external data sources to SharePoint is something developers may see challenging. SharePoint 2013 has a really good feature (which was in SharePoint 2010 as well) further improved with multiple data source supports as well as features such as remote event receivers.

External Content Types provide the facility to connect the data to SharePoint and a Secure Store Service application can be used for providing the better authorizations.

Slides of the presentation can be downloaded from below.

Microsoft Azure Mobile Services @ Sri Lanka .NET Forum, July 2014 Meetup

I got the opportunity to do my fourth Sri Lanka .NET Forum presentation on 3rd July 2014. This time the topic was "Microsoft Azure Mobile Services". I had recently engaged with the Azure Mobile Services for working on the app we created for Microsoft Imagine Cup 2014 called "LiveZen". To give more details about the Azure Mobile Services, here is what Microsoft says.

Azure Mobile Services provides a scalable and secure backend that can be used to power apps on any platform–iOS, Android, Windows or Mac. It’s easy to store app data in the cloud or on-premises, authenticate users, and send push notifications, as well as add your custom backend logic in C# or Node.js.

The presentation went fine with a good crowd and had a successful Q and A session with many questions asked by people from the audience. I mainly focused on demonstrating the steps to create a backend easily within few minutes and connect to the database.

Azure actually provide much advanced features such as Single Sign-On support, enhanced security and scaling servers and ect... Would like to cover them in a future presentation.

How to Work with Sensors for Windows Phone @ Sri Lanka .NET Forum, December 2013 Meetup

Windows Phone is made amazing with a set of sensors that work together in order to provide some great functionality as in the other smartphone platforms.

In this presentation I spoke about an overview of the sensors in Windows Phone and then did a demonstration  on few sensors including Acelerometer and Gyroscope.

It's really great the support Windows Phone Emulator provide when it comes to testing the sensors and everything.

Introduction to Windows Phone 8 Development @ Sri Lanka .NET Forum, August 2013 Meetup

I got the opportunity to do my second Sri Lanka .NET Forum presentation on 8th August 2013. Even there were many presentations done by me on Windows Phone development at MS Champs Community and once for University of Kelaniya staff, this one looked bit different as the attendees are professional developers. So no free MSDN subscriptions or developer license for this crowd.

As Windows Phone is an interesting topic for anybody who would love a smartphone, no need explain the interest of the crowd on the technology. The presentation took place after a fabulous presentation by MS Office MVP Dr. Nitin Sadashiv Paranjape which was scheduled at last minute.

Programming with HTML 5 Web Sockets @ Sri Lanka .NET Forum, April 2013 Meetup

This is the my first presentation for the .NET Forum Sri Lanka and thought of presenting something that has been new and exiting yet not well sung which is the web socket programming feature that comes with HTML 5. If you have visited Cricinfo website, you might have seen the scorecard getting updated every 15 seconds. This is done by refreshing the particular div every-time using Ajax. Practically, there is no way a ball being bowled every 15 seconds and the server bandwidth gets wasted in hundreds and thousands times.
